In the long run there's still time to change the road you're on...
Have you ever been asked the question, "Where do you see yourself in 5 years? How about 10 years?"

I really disdain that question.

Not because it often generates hackneyed answers from the individual who is being questioned, but because I personally find it difficult to answer. Where I see myself in the near future is not something entirely palpable. I do not have concrete plans to relocate, enroll in a graduate program, cure the common cold or climb Mount Everest. I live in the present, operating on a vague road map of where I am to go in the immediate future.

If you ask me right now where I see myself in 5 or 10 years, I would honestly tell you that I don't know.

Now, don't get me wrong; I have ambitions and goals.

- I want to travel to Italy, Great Britain, France, Switzerland and Australia.
- I want to see the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx.
- I want to see the Northern Lights.
- I want to acquire a master's degree.
- I want to participate in a triathlon.
- I want to live in Portland, Oregon once.
- I want to learn to speak basic Latin, Italian and German.

Get the idea?

The problem is, none of these things can be used as an answer to the aforementioned question.

Why?

Because, personally, where I want to be in 5 or 10 years can't be completely explained without me sounding like a self-help guru. It's more of a question of how I want to be: Self-confident, self-assured, self-reliant, self-realized, leading a simple life and at peace with every thing and every one surrounding me.

I imagine it would look something like this...

Granted this obviously staged picture is a bit cheesy and I am not a champion knitter, it conveys the feeling I am going for well enough. :)

- I want to live in Portland, Oregon once.

Hurrah! That would be fantastic.

The moment spent over cups of coffee and giant breadcrumbs would be bountiful!

OH MAN DO ALL OF US EVER NEED ANOTHER POWELLS PIZZA AND GALLIVANTING DATE

Notice the importance of the statement above, emphasized by lack of lower case letter and punctuation. :D

Once I got that question during an interview, and I had to stifle laughter. I didn't realize people actually asked that. If prompted ten years ago with that question (I was, let's see, an angsty high school freshman) would I have said anything related to what I'm actually doing now? Not at all.

I enjoy that photo as well. Moreso for the book collection. That's also what I expected my collection to resemble 10 years ago but alas, I only have about 1/4 of it :)

Ah, same here! I will know life is wonderful when I have amassed an impressive collection of good books, a nice dark-haired lad, and a big cuddly cat. :D

Oh boy. I've been asking myself that question almost every day. I have in fact brought it to the surface in the last few weeks. Sigh. I dunno where i'll be when I'm 30 either XP

Or was it Spain we were going to visit...?

ps...for a split second i thought the guy in your photo was Jim from The Office and all I could think was, hell yeah i'd want to be sitting with him in five years. does that mean i'm a bad person?

Ahhh, fearless leader! I'm doing very well! I just moved into an upstairs apartment in Downtown Sac with lovely hardwood floors, so life's pretty sweet! How the heck are you?! I'm jealous you went to Disneyland for your birthday!

I haven't been there since, wait for it, I was in the band. :-/ I have not seen the new Space Mountain yet! Booo!

P.S. - You need to update your journal, more, miss! ;) And what type of fanfiction have you been up to writing? :D

my life revolves around veronica mars. it's sad, but true.

i'll try to update more often. i've cut down on the tv watching and the paying attention to pop culture junk that i used to do so frequently my mind was becoming mush, but it seems like telling people i sat at home and wrote a couple fics is boring... (that sentence was pathetically run-on)

i shall try to be more interesting now that i am in my 30s. that way i'll have something to write about.
